Chipala's Brace Inspires Silver Past 10-Man Karonga
Charles Chipala scored two goals on his first start of the season to guide Silver Strikers past 10-man Karonga United with a 2-0 win in the first leg of the Airtel Top 8 quarterfinal at Silver Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Chipala opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a lovely volley after being found by Festus Duwe, before doubling the lead in the 35th minute. He missed a chance to complete his hat-trick after firing a penalty wide a minute later in a dominant first-half display.
Lovemore Ngolombe was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in the incident that led to the penalty, leaving Karonga United a man down for 55 minutes. The visitors managed to prevent further damage in the second half.
Head coach Peter Mgangira described the result as disappointing, saying his team could have scored more than five goals.
“I’m disappointed with the performance because I thought we could have scored almost five goals with how
we created chances in the game. It is good that we have won, but I am not happy with the performance,” said Mgangira.
He however believes the team will do better in the second leg in Karonga, with the possibility of creating more chances.
Silver will take a two-goal lead into the second leg away at Karonga Stadium for the return match.
