Malawi Qualify for First-Ever WAFCON After Historic Win Over Angola
The Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, have made history by qualifying for their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating Angola 2–0 in Lilongwe.
After a goalless draw in the first leg, Malawi rose to the occasion in the decisive return match. Faith Chinzimu was the hero of the night, scoring twice in quick succession, 81st and 83rd minutes sending the home crowd into celebration. The opening goal came after Tabitha Chawinga, who plays for Olympique Lyonnais Féminin in France, produced a dazzling solo run past several defenders before setting up Chinzimu for a calm finish.
Coach Lovemore Fazili’s side displayed determination, discipline, and attacking flair throughout the encounter, fulfilling his earlier promise to guide the team to WAFCON qualification. The victory marks a proud moment in Malawi’s football history and a major boost for women’s football in the country.
