Khumalo's free kick cleans Scorchers' mudy performance
Scorchers have finished their COSAFA Women's Championship Group matches on a high note after securing a 1-0 win over Angola despite putting an unimpressive performance at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in South Africa on Tuesday.
Ireen Khumalo scored a 44 metres free kick to secure the win in the 79th minute as Malawi finish second in Group A and knock out of the tournament.
The team missed the top spot after their second match on head to head with South Africa and failed to secure a best second placed team spot following victories of Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, Malawi put up a very low performance as Angola dominated the game with the Scorchers surviving scares several times into the game following the defense's and goalkeeper's patience.
The team failed to keep possession as their midfield was dead forcing defenders to play long balls that strikers failed to copy up with into the game.
Scorchers then needed a moment of brilliance which Khumalo did to find the back of the net with a well taken free kick and take herself as a joint top scorer alongside Deborah Henry and Makhotso Moalosi of Lesotho, who has scored in every game at the tournament.
Head Coach Lovemore Fazili said it is painful to fail to be knocked out of the tournament but was satisfied with the performance of the players against Angola.
"There's a lot of things learnt from these games ahead of the WAFCON because we have known which players are ready for the tournament," said Fazili.
He also said that the team will not break their camp as they will continue preparing for the Womens African Cup of Nations and hailed the timing of the COSAFA tournament which has helped them see where the team is.
The team has managed to secure two wins and lost one to occupy 6 points in their group having scored 9 goals and conceding three goals in Group A.
