Malawi's Faith not enough to secure World Cup place but goals
Malawi U-20 Womens Football team failed to secure a place at the 2026 Poland FIFA U-20 World Cup after suffering a heart-breaking 3-2 defeat on aggregate over Nigeria at the Bingu National Stadium on Saturday.
The Young Scorchers narrowly missed a chance to take themselves to the World stage after their 2-1 win at home proving not enough as Nigeria had a 2-0 advantage from a win in the first leg at their backyard.
Faith Chinzimu netted twice in each half while an error from Leticia Chinyamula gifted Nigeria a precious goal to secure a win.
Head coach for the team, Maggie Chombo Sadick, was in tears after the game but praised her players for their effort in the game and throughout the campaign.
"I must thanked the girls for the spirit shown in the game, they played according to my instructions and we tried but a simple mistake cost us," Chombo said.
