Scorchers' semifinal hopes in jeopardy after Zambia-Zimbabwe
Malawi Women's team's hopes of reaching the semi final of COSAFA Women's Championship is now jeopardy after having an unfavourable result in Group B that saw Zambia and Zimbabwe playing a goalless draw on Sunday.
Malawi had hopes of progressing through as the best runners up after South Africa secured the top of the group A place on head to head and secured a big 8-1 win on Saturday to strengthen their hopes.
Meanwhile, in a top of the table crash involving the derby between Zimbabwe and Zambia, the two sides settled for a goalless draw in each team's second game of the group.
The results leave both teams with four points from one win and one draw ahead of their final round of matches where Zambia will face Eswatini while Zimbabwe will play Botswana.
Zambia leads the group on goal difference but a win for both teams, who go into their last games as favourites, will take them up to 7 points where one will progress
as leaders and the other as the best runner up.
In the case of both teams winning in their final matches, it would mean Malawi will be knocked out of the competition even if they beat Angolawhich also eye the same best second placed team spot to progress.
As it stands, Botswana and Eswatini have a point each in the group after playing a 1-1 and it is unlikely to cause upset on the top two teams in their group meaning Malawi would need a miracle to progress.
